The paramount importance of this film to American popular culture is due to how representative it is of that nation's values and philosophy of life. They screen it every Christmas. To be frank, it's nothing but a moral tale and it simply oozes sentimentality.
That said, it's by no means unintelligent, and besides being an essential cultural artifact it's a pretty good movie per se.
