Review of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) by Jacqueline E — 14 Nov 2009
Only the first half hour or so (the man kicking the bucket, Jerry LEwis running over the hat and Jonathan Winters tearing apart the gas station) was worth watching.
After that, I felt like I was being tortured. I know the characters are not meant to be likable, but I actually ended up hating them all. They were mean, dishonest, stupid and annoying.
Usually, vice and stupidity in comedy makes me laugh. But this time, the idiocy and vice only brought out the worst in me. I was cranky and angry when it was finished.
Can someone explain to me why this is a classic? If a movie like this was made today, it would be a flop.
