Review of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) by Colin H — 30 Nov 2010
Is that mad enough for you?? I don't think it is for this film.
When a man dies as his car hurtles off a mountain pass road, several random strangers get out of their vehicles to hear his dying words. With cryptic clues, he tells them he has buried thousands of dollars, and he wants them to have it. With little faith in each other, the strangers set off in a manic race across America to find the money first!
This film is long. In fact the original cut was in real time, going over three hours! This version was about two and a half, and personally, it dragged. With the entire cast made up of 1960s comedians, there are some great comedic moments to be had, as well as destruction on a large scale; vehicles are trashed, buildings demolished, aircraft crashed. Everything you can imagine in a chase movie is here.
It is certainly something to see, but only if you can bear nearly three hours of it! I know I was flagging by the drawn out finale.
