Review of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) by Spencer S — 02 Oct 2011
Irritatingly an hour longer than it needs to be for such a vacuous plot - I guess everyone was having so much fun they didn't want to stop. Like many farces, the 'midpoint' crescendo hits the tempo and humour highpoint, everything after adds very little in way of laughs and plot.
And in this case, there's a lot of "everything after". Armed with a love of American comics circa 1963, you may well love this film - I gather pretty much every living funny-man from the time is paraded in front of the camera - but If you're not in on the joke, it all feels terribly cliquey with laughs few and far between.
