Review of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) by Jack W — 06 Jan 2011
A delightful romp through Southern California, using maybe the largest ensemble cast ever garnered for a film, some great aerial photography, some hair raising and amazing stunt driving and crashes and what now becomes a nostalgic picture of what Southern California used to look like.
The narrative twists and turns as much as the highway that Jimmy Durante launches himself from which starts the entire escapade. The cast is a who's who of cinema with stars from Tracy to Rooney playing major roles.
The aerial photography and stunts are really cool, leaving you wondering how they accomplished many of the shots they did achieve. The films enduring legacy though is the beautiful photographic evidence of Southern California as a quaint burgeoning area, before the mass influx of population, development and growth.
Just amazing that this film is just barely fifty years old, it gives an amazing insight into how LA looked in 1963. Good film to see.
