Review of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) by Guy G — 27 Dec 2011
[C/60] A fat, romping, madcap chase comedy, featuring an unparalleled ensemble cast of the era's biggest comedic stars and dozens of winky cameos. Hard to believe someone could pull something like this together, considering all the money and egos and schedules that must have been involved; but what's more surprising is how relatively little substantial comedy gold is rendered from such a bounty of talent.
There's a lot of vapid space in this long, air-headed and bloated rush into slapstick mediocrity, into what's become a veritable Stonehenge of Hollywood kitsch. It's nevertheless sometimes pretty fun in evoking a spirit of nonsensical excess and profligate impishness.
Enjoy with some persuasive liquid refreshments.
