Review of It's a Free World... (2007) by Codie E — 30 Nov 2007
It is nice to see an immigration and organised foreign workers film from the view of the British bosses, in this case a single Mum working with only her friend. And what results is a film that questions the motives and morality of a person in a position that could and would have been easier to portray them as a monster.
Loach keeps most of his same team, Morris - Editor, Laverty - Writer, O'Brien - Producer and it is clear to see that they work so well as a team and have the perfect understanding of the subject that they wish to explore.
The are a few poor lines and shakey deliveries as well as a couple of questionable plot points, which makes this is a slight step back in my opinion for Loach after The Wind That Shakes The Barley, Ae Fond Kiss and Sweet Sixteen, but a good, intelligent and passionate film nonetheless.
