Review of It Might Get Loud (2008) by Geoffrey T — 11 Apr 2012
A great documentary on the art of the electric guitar and a necessary viewing for any guitar player. It's wonderful to see these three talk about their philosophies of music and how they go about songwriting, especially considering how vastly different they are.
Page is very abstract. The Edge is extremely calculated, using tons of effects to try and mimic the sound in his head. White is obsessed with authenticity, and often just plays from the subconscious until it just flows into a song.
This is very evident even from the first scene, when he makes a guitar out of a piece of wood, a random string, and a coke bottle. Overall it's a very educational and enjoyable film that any music lover would surely appreciate.
And your face will melt at the various jam sessions these guys do together. I'd love to see a sequel or an extended version that includes Kirk Hammett, because I think they covered the broad forms of guitar playing without really touching on the style he uses.
Great film.
