Review of It Happened One Night (1934) by Alison P — 12 Aug 2008
I watched it after learning about the Hays Code. I thought it was good but not great. Also, the title is misleading because the story unfolds over several nights, none of which is really more important than the other. Gable's character makes it seem odd that Colbert's would fall for him, but then this was the 30s, and maybe there was a little Stockholm-type empathy going on.
Still, I felt engaged throughout the movie, and it gets points for that. I'd never marry a man named King. All in all, this is good, solid, classic Capra, but its strict morality standards inhibit some witty banter and reparte.
