Review of It Happened One Night (1934) by Calvin C — 23 Feb 2010
The grand daddy of all romantic comedies. No wonder it swept the Academy Awards for lead actor, actress, screenplay, direction, and Best Picture. Though it was shot in 1934, everything still feels fresh, relevant, and ahead of its time. Gable and Colbert's chemistry is unmatched, even by today's standards and makes all other on-screen couples second-rate. The script is witty, sharp, and funny. To have so much sexual tension and not have one on-screen kiss tells you that you can show sexuality in other ways. It is more about friendship and companionship than mere lust and physical attraction and how sometimes its the ones we don't expect that sweep us off our feet.
