Review of It Happened One Night (1934) by Uditha D — 30 Dec 2011
Legend has it that Clark Gable's character in this lovable classic inspired Bugs Bunny. I wouldn't be surprised, but that wasn't all in this that made It Happened One Night that lovable a classic.
It fused up elements of comedy and romance to such an effective extent that I simply couldn't differentiate between the two at some points. It's not my favorite screwball or romantic comedy, but even an amateur can't fail to see the charm it underlies.
Frank Capra shot the comedy in this film to greatly hilarious proportions: scenes such as that one where Gable and Claudette Colbert act as a ragamuffin couple to hide from some detectives (sent there to look for Colbert) were beautifully hilarious.
And that "walls of Jericho" scene wasn't bad either. Ultimately, I felt this to be a most hilarious depiction of an unlikely couple's wild escapades across America, and with its searing chaos and implied passions, It Happened One Night was, to put it colloquially, one hell of a experience for me.
