Review of It Happened in Hollywood (1937) by Timothy M — 06 Dec 2010
A nice little gem that's been tucked away for some time. The Film Foundation's restoration is stellar, though. It boasts a story by Samuel Fuller (good), with Richard Dix and Fay Wray as its stars (erm.
.. oh.) But they both surprised me, Dix in particular. It's not a particularly complex or nuanced performance, but it's quite genuine. The story itself is very good, I thought, one of integrity vs.
prosperity and all that stuff, built around the sound conversion of late-20s Hollywood. Although clunky at times and corny, Lachman manages to pull off a few nifty sequences, including an unusual barfight, and a party attended by a massive cast of Hollywood stand-ins.
