Review of It Happened in Brooklyn (1947) by Neil O — 15 Aug 2009
Despite a paper thin plot, this is a good Sinatra vehicle that features several great songs from Sammy Cahn and Julie Styne (The Brooklyn Bridge/Time After Time/It's The Same Old Dream) and a great supporting cast of Jimmy Durante, Katheryn Grayson and Peter Lawford.
Filmed in black-and-white, and featuring a young, but uncredited, Andre Previn on the piano, this was Sinatra's third film for M.G.M. The remarkable thing is how rich Sinatra's voice is. Aged 32 and on the cusp of his great breakthrough at Capitol Records, the voice doesn't seem to fit the scrawny young fellow singing.
