Review of It Follows (2015) by Ted R — 06 May 2017
Future horror movie directors should study this film. It's a shining example of how cinematography and sound can create tension, dread, and suspense. Being scary doesn't mean you have to have jump scares every 5 seconds. Using zooms and pans to slowly show something or someone being creepy is much more effective than someone jumping out and saying "BOO!". It's the difference between actually scaring someone and just startling them.
All praise for the execution of the film aside, the story is just alright. It's not really one that you're going to want to watch over and over. If they make a sequel, I don't see myself being interested in it. It's a great exercise in showing how to do pacing, scenery, soundtrack, etc, but lacks a bit in terms of story. Thankfully it remains watchable by having a relatively short runtime of around 90 minutes or so. It's worth a view, but don't expect to be blown away by it.
