Review of It Follows (2015) by Hotfromcauldron — 13 Mar 2015
What follows a promising opening? Nothing. I fell for the hype. One point for the marketing. And another for a loud foreboding score. Okay, one more for atmosphere and cinematography. But what about story? Do bullets kill “it” ? And exactly what is “it”? And why is ‘it’? And when does "it " stop? And if you don't see "it" why can you feel "it"? And does anyone know what a condom is? Or does it matter? And how many kids does it take to not show up anywhere before anyone gets suspicious? Or show up in the hospital with gun shot wounds for that matter? The writer makes up the rules to his game of tag as he goes along.
I hate movies that don’t follow their own bible. Create any world you want but give me the logic that makes ‘it’ work. What we are left with is enough footage for a very cool and effective two minute public service message for STDs- a la Reefer Madness.
This Rocky Herpes Show makes Babadook look like The Exorcist. Another recent horror film that relied on character rather than violence - yet knew how to keep true to itself right till the very end. Stay home.
Watch Brian De Palma’s Carrie.
