Review of It Follows (2015) by Art S — 17 Dec 2015
The premise of this horror movie is pretty good - but it does make the monster strangely similar to a venereal disease. It follows you around until you pass it to someone else by having sex with them. Fortunately, it walks very slow - which is creepy and creates a great deal of suspense.
The monster also takes different guises, so a different actor plays it each time. So, a bunch of teens confront this threat but it is a real challenge to stop; plaudits to the movie for keeping things realistic and practical (taking its cues from night of the living dead) even as the whole concept is not.
The soundtrack and the burnt out neighbourhoods of Detroit add to the spooky atmosphere (and the absence of gore is a plus for me). Unfortunately, the filmmakers seem to run out of steam with their premise and can't quite produce a satisfying ending.
But this is still one of the better recent horror flicks, in a genre that is pretty tough to get right.
