Review of It Follows (2015) by Dan H — 06 May 2017
It Follows is heavily flawed in its story. Although the technical execution is superb, what one needs in order to make a good film is a satisfying story, an ultimate climax, something that the tension builds up to.
What we get in It Follows is all of the suspense without the payoff. This review is coming from a mindset that loves metaphors, and is constantly looking for them when watching film. Because of this reason, the film confused the hell outta me, for it had no distinct purpose.
I couldn't tell what the director was trying to SAY. Unlike other modern, critically acclaimed horror films (The Babadook comes to mind), It Follows doesn't know what it's symbolism is actually attempting to convey, and for this reason, the film gets muddled down into a pretty cheesy horror flick that probably doesn't deserve the acclaim that it has received.
A disappointing, frustrating watch.
