Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Raevin P — 18 Jun 2017
I enjoyed seeing this film. Not really "horror" in the traditional pop and scare, this intellectual film pursues the ideas of human survival in the sudden collapse of humanity from an unidentified or unstoppable threat: a contagious virus. The scenes move with a steady firm flow, always moving in the house between rooms and people, but ultimately back to the door of the house. This door reflects "Nightmare of Elm Street" and the unknown or unseen threat that suddenly comes at night, suggesting zombies, echoing Romero's "Night of the Living Dead.".
We don't get to see the world before or after the collapse, just what the characters say may be "out there". We get to see lives robbed, murdered, betrayed in the name of family and self preservation. The most horrific part is how humans treat each other in the name of survival and fear, putting one's family over neighbor. Most would in such cases to survive.
I give this four stars as the pace was slow in the beginning and focuses mostly on the interpersonal relationships of the family, new comers, and world before the resolution and action at the end.
