Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Diane S — 20 Jun 2017
TBH I understand the film from a cinematic standpoint, as I have studied films in the past. However, seeing as I watched this in a theater, anticipating a real horror thriller, I was very disappointed.
While it was beautifully shot, characters were developed and the premise was intriguing, the film lacked what everyone desired in the end... resolve. It didn't answer anything, left everyone utterly in the dark.
It was as if the director seemingly forgot to tie up loose ends. This movie could have been a 5 star movie from the average movie goer, if it had simply given some context and some answers. I can see why critics may like this film, it is new, fresh, and has certain element of sophistication in its building of suspense and character.
It's cinematography is very noticeable, and very good. There's no denying these things, but, at the end of the day, there needs to be enough information for the audience to understand the film, this film left way too much open to interpretation.
If this film had a specific target audience, it should be in mainstream theaters because most of the audience in my theater was very confused and disappointed, sadly. I really wish I could've loved this film more, but it lacked some fundamental features.
