Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Teddywyman — 11 Jun 2017
The ratings here are more because the movie was different than what many people expected, not because it's a bad movie. It is very dark, depressing, and tense, and it purposefully doesn't give you a full explanation so that certain events are left up to your interpretation.
This is so that the feeling of havoc and mistrust felt by the characters is also felt by you, as you are unsure of what to believe. The main themes are regarding the actions that people take when in desperate situations, and how trust plays into a crisis.
It is both an interesting look at humanity and also a look at yourself, as you find yourself thinking about the actions you yourself would take, what kind of person you are, and which characters you sympathize more with.
It's a neat psychological thriller that messes with your head and makes you think. It may not scare you like how Saw scares you, but it scares you like how reading about a murder in the news scares you.
It's a kind of real fear that keeps you up at night and can't be solved by turning a nightlight on. It's not a rip-roaring thrill ride, but rather a slow-burning thinker. Not for everyone, but I found it interesting and I cared about the characters.
