Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Chris F — 13 Jun 2017
It Comes at Night is a wildly different film than the trailers make it out to be. Still, it is haunting and emotional. Joel Edgerton is excellent in the lead role. The boy who plays his son is also great, as is the rest of the cast.
Director Trey Edward Schults knows what he is doing behind the camera. This was evident in his directorial debut Krisha. In this film, he ranks up the tension. The movie isn't straight horror. It is more of a paranoid thriller.
The film is also intentionally vague about the circumstances of the film. I liked that, because that wasn't the main focus of the film. The film is about paranoia and trust. I can't really say more without delving into spoiler territory.
Overall, this is an incredibly bleak movie. It has more on its mind than the average horror film. It is filled with tension and dread. As long as you adjust your expectations and ignore the misleading marketing, you'll enjoy this film.
