Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Edward R — 13 Jun 2017
I may have seen too many horror movies, but I have to give this a 3 star rating because ... I just believe that there was no pay-off. When you consider the title of this movie, when (what turns out to be Macguffins) the audience is steered towards what is supposed to be a legit separate physical entity, all proves false, there comes a feeling of being mislead or even ripped off.
Don't get me wrong, all of the actors, the writing, the cinematographer, all were excellent. What outstanding performances, but just no payoff. Imagine being told that you are going to be served ____ for a meal, then you get something totally different.
Sure the meal might have been enjoyable, but it just wasn't what you expected. You will get your money's worth, it just isn't as GREAT as the critics are saying. I feel like since this movie is so different from what has been coming out of this genre for the last few years, the critics are overpraising.
Yes, Virginia, once upon a time, horror/suspense movies used to be dialogue-heavy and rely on the actor's performances. It wasn't always about showing the bogey man performing his handiwork. This movie is perfect example of this premise.
