Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Elijahlove — 07 Dec 2017
Boy this movie was a horrible mess. It could have been a lot better. One of the first rules that a great movie must have is a universe where it follows its own rules. The viewer has to know these rules and they have to be consistent.
This movie failed in this regard and that is why the movie failed. The best way to understand this is to take a great movie and dissect it with this rule in mind. The Sixth Sense is a Great movie. It sets up a universe with a rule, gives you hints throughout, and stays true to its rule.
It Comes at Night fails because it never sets up the rules about the universe the characters live in. For example, can we know something more about the disease, how you catch it, how you know someone is sick, can the door be unlocked from the inside without the key, etc.
Without the rules and more logical and consistent clues, the movie does not really come together where the movie goer can figure things out. It falls flat and is inconsistent and incoherent. If everyone has diff theories about what really happened in the movie it is not a good thing.
Its okay for people to have a different idea about what a movie meant, but people should be given a fair chance to figure a movie out. Again the Sixth Sense is a great example of the movie maker getting it right.
