Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Sean T — 25 Jun 2017
Things this movie did very well: the suspense and the dread of human interaction in a volatile post-apocalyptic world.
Things this movie did very poorly: Lacks a sense of atmosphere outside of the singular setting. Why is the plague happening? Where did everyone go? Why is the power out? There are also bits of dialogue that just seem to be needless and add confusion to the story. During a conversation, one of the main characters Paul discovers another character has been lying to him. However, in the end, the lie told by the other character doesn't actually affect the character at all other than to set up the fact that he for some reason is lying. (Which is a lie that isn't even a lie that covers up his OTHER lies??). Lastly, the movie was well written, but the ending seems like they ripped off the last 10 or so pages of the script and said: "Go ahead and just end it there". It was not just underwhelming, but an absolute cop out.
Overall, the substance of the movie is fantastic. When the movie gets going, it REALLY gets going. However, if you are the type of person to stop and think during a movie, you'll really hate it.
