Review of It Comes at Night (2017) by Nathan R — 25 Jun 2017
This film gets the award for Most Misleading Title of the Year. You might think from such a name that something may creep around the shadows hunting people when the sun goes down. No. It's nothing like that, and if you think it might be before you see it, you should probably turn around and walk away.
A bunch of people sit around in a house and talk a whole lot while a teenager has nightmares every fifteen minutes of screen time. There was even a point where he had a nightmare within a nightmare within a nightmare. That's how lazy this writing is.
The film is all mood and zero plot. Just when I think the movie would start to go somewhere creepy and disturbing, it ran away from that concept and went with more boring options. The woman in the seat next to me actually curled up in her seat and went to SLEEP.
Who opened the red door? What did Travis see in the woods? Was there anything even in the woods? What made the dog sick? Was the dog even sick, or was it wounded? How did the infection spread? If it was spread through touch, why are they wearing masks? If it was airborne, why are they afraid of it spreading through touch? How did people die from it? What was the extent of the biological damage it did on the human body? Why did they have to actually burn the corpses? Was there even a point to that? Couldn't they just bury them? How did grandpa get sick in the beginning of the movie if they were being so cautious about not spreading it? Where did the disease come from? How did it even spread effectively in the middle of nowhere with no one to pass it to?
Look, I get that this is a story about human morals and how we all become monsters in survival situations and yadda yadda, but there are already about twenty Twilight Zone episodes about that very thing. I get it. I know it. I don't need to be told a million times.
When the credits rolled, a couple of people were laughing. I got up halfway through to take a piss and missed literally nothing.
