Review of It Chapter Two (2019) by Moviemitch96 — 07 Sep 2019
I wasn't at all a fan of the first 'It' film from 2 years ago. I found most of the child actors rather annoying, not to mention they made it feel like a wannabe Spielberg movie more often than not, and the scare attempts felt far too forced and in-your-face for my liking.
So I proceeded with caution going into this film with my fingers crossed that the adult cast could help bring something new and fun to it, and while the likes of Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, etc.
all give great performances and are definitely much more bearable than the kids, unfortunately the same scare tactics are in place in this film as well. Jump scares you can see coming from a mile away are plentiful in this, and I almost always felt like I knew what was going to happen next.
Furthermore, that hit or miss de-aging technology was used for the kid actors during many flashback scenes, and it looked quite spotty to me often times. And while it didn't necessarily feel long, it definitely was long, pushing the 3-hour mark.
Overall, if you enjoyed the first 'It', there should be plenty to admire about this one, such as the spooky atmosphere and great performances from the cast, but if you're like me and you weren't won over by the first film's style and scare attempts, this one likely won't quite win you over, although I will say that it does wrap things up pretty nicely, and I'm about to state a seemingly unpopular opinion when I say that I did like this one slightly more than the first, but not by much.
