"It Came From Beneath the Sea" is unfortunately a typical sci-fi monster movie. The ridiculous script contains all of the B-movie staples, including dull dialogue and an awkward romance; all the while the diraction and cinematogaphy are primitive.

Normally, the presence of Ray Harryhausen's monster effects would be enough to save this type of film from mediocrity. However, the Giant Octopus, while impressive, barely gets enough screen time to threaten humanity. When we see the Octopus for the first time, dragging a ship to the bottom of the sea with its tentacles, it's fun to watch. Unfortunately the Octopus rarely does anything else; grabbing people and buildings, but thats about it.

I can only really recommend this film to admirers of Harryhausen's work or giant-monster movie fans. Other types of viewers aren't missing much.
