This horror flick isn't much of a horror at all, but rather yet another throwback film jumping on the nostalgia train of recent years. By far the strongest aspect of It is its acting. Not only are the child protagonists capable of acting well beyond their years, but Bill Skarsgard portrays the best crazed lunatic since Heath Ledger's Joker!

It's hard to find visuals that thrill in this day and age with such state-of-the-art effects having become commonplace, but is manages to deliver with excellence in makeup and camera tricks that made me emit an audible "Woah!".

As a horror film itself, It unfortunately falls flat. The scares are very effective, to be sure, but are too few and far between to sustain lasting tentions. It tries to balance sweet, heartfelt chemistry between the heroes with brutal, graphic terror and it can't seem to get the ratio just right, as the transition is often apparent and forced. It, despite its imperfections, breathes much-needed life into the dying horror genre and is well worth the price of admission.
