Review of It (2017) by Brandon O — 04 Jan 2018
Does It live up to the hype? Sort of.
The central kids are the biggest highlight by far. They carry the chemistry, humor, and heart with ease, and the audience feels like they're on this journey with them. Muschietti's maintained tone and stylistic flourishes are in favor of the film too. Pennywise is fairly frightening overall, and the mesh of practical/CGI for his appearance works well. Certain imagery and scares are strong, but others are completely deflated by questionable filmmaking choices (Iooking at you, opening scene). Thematically, "fear" is glanced at, but unfortunately becomes trounced by dialogic overstatement instead of delving into it deeply through cinematic vision and images.
Recommendable horror? Sure, but it's no Get Out or Raw.
