Review of It (2017) by Isaac J — 08 Apr 2018
It's acceptable, but I barely felt scared at all throughout this one.
Most of the kids were amazing, although Beverly seemed to be 2-3 years older than the rest. Their interactions were all great and not neutered in terms of language. Maybe Richie got a little too many quips. At times it felt like he was just a quip machine with barely anything else going on inside of his mind. Mike's role was cut out so much, and that really surprised me. I mean really? You're gonna shrink the only black character's role down to basically having a gun? Why? You'd expect them to give him a bigger role. That was just odd.
The horror part of this film flat out didn't work for me, except for one lonely scene. It mostly felt like a horror house with animatronics who are kinda scary, but you can clearly see that they're just machines. For some reason, all the horror fell completely flat on its face. It also didn't help that dumb loud noises were used in most of those cases. That severely disappointed me.
As a package, it's a rather nice little movie, but I can't bring myself to honestly call it a horror movie. I mean it technically is, but... It's just not scary. Same as that recent Goosebumps movie. It's horror-themed, but it's really not scary at all.
