Review of It (2017) by D C — 15 Apr 2018
The clouds begin to darken as you walk the streets of the town. It looks like it will rain again. You see a torn missing child poster on the post of a street lamp. The streets are empty and devoid of people yet the faint echoes of laughter reaches your ears. Suddenly, your gaze shifts: a bright red balloon floats in the air held by a pale-faced clown.
"Hiya," says the clown. Its blood-red lips curl revealing a toothy grin. "Do you wanna float too?".
The film IT (2017) directed by Andy Muschetti is an excellent and terrifying film. From the very start of the film, the movie's musical score and dark lighting sets the tone for the rest of film. One concern I had was if the movie would over-rely on jump-scares to frighten its audience (many horror movies make this mistake). Luckily, The movie doesn't heavily rely on jump scares to terrify the audience. Instead it uses the environment and mood establishment like lighting, tilted camera angles, and music to lead up to its moments of terror. All the actors in this film play their roles very well but I must give kudos to Bill Skarsgard who plays the role of the clown Pennywise. GOOD MERCY HE'S TERRIFYING! Skarsgard with his movement, facial expressions (ESPECIALLY THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS), voice, and acting make this character believable, instilling fear into you every time you see him. Even for a coward such as myself I enjoyed every minute of this movie and I really recommend this movie if you are a horror lover or not. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars! SEE YOU IN CHAPTER 2.
