Review of Isolation (2005) by Bryan Y — 01 Jul 2007
I wasn't expecting anything from this film, but I liked what I got. It's basically like "The Thing", only it isn't an alien infecting people, it's a fetus-like creature that begins spawning from cows.
If there's one aspect the film nailed, it has to be the overall tone of the movie. It is completely serious, dark, and contains absolutely no humor. I also I wasn't expecting the intensity to some of the scenes (one scene in particular: bolt gun failing to kill a calf).
This also has to be one of the very first horror films where they're are no protagonists or antagonists, only victims. And I know people have said and will continue to say, "But hey! The hillbillies from Hills Have Eyes were victims too! They got radiation poisoning! That's why they're so horrible! It's the government's fault!" No, they committed atrocities by thier own choosing.
Isolation on the other hand, just has victims of circumstance. Even one character that could be taken as being "bad" has positive motives for what he does. The creature itself never asked to be made and seeks to do what all parasites do: find a host.
Then everyone else, well for the most part, they just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. In the end though, if you're looking for a creepy, and rather gory (yet linear) tale of genetics gone awry, then check this one out.
