Review of Isolation (2005) by Kev S — 14 Dec 2008
Textbook "base under siege" horror. A claustrophobic location from which the characters can't escape, plenty of shadowy nooks and crannies for the monster to stalk, and a creature that is kept in the shadows and never revealed in it's entirety.
The creature concept is unsettling and the gore level is just high enough (and lingered over just long enough) to be disturbing.
What makes the film though is the brilliant transformation of a rather run down farm into a superbly chilling location. You can't get much more mundane than a dairy farm but the director makes good use of lighting and set design to make this a place of brooding horror.
Very reminiscent of Alien (see the finale in the milking shed) and some of the shocks are preditable (see the vet putting her arm up the cow) The characters could benefit from being more developed. We never do find out who the young travelling couple are running from, or why.
Overall though a very dark, gruesome, effective horror movie.
