Review of Isle of Dogs (2018) by Luke E — 30 Apr 2018
????????? is all I've got to say about Wes Anderson's latest animated venture which might as well be his finest 'Animated' effort ever. While I'm also a huge admirer of 'Fantastic Mr.
Fox', 'Isle of Dogs' actually has a greater sense of authenticity and world building mechanics and that unique quirky Wes Anderson charm that entertains audiences. At the same time the very Kurosawa-esque film feels like a foreign language film especially for it's foreign setting and use of the Japanese Language contrasting with a lot of English dialogue too, but it's very effective as I also don't think cultural contextualization and appropriation isn't antagonized or dissuaded as the setting and civilization serves the film well.
Every shot is like a painting or a piece of authentic Japanese puppetry, beautifully detailed and constructed as if I'm almost watching a piece of Anime or Kabuki put together in such vivid and ecstatic composition.
There's never a dull moment in this truly tremendous piece of an animated masterpiece that has to be experienced on the big screen to be believed.
