Review of Isle of Dogs (2018) by Lana B — 11 Oct 2018
I very much enjoyed watching the movie, Isle of Dogs, mainly because of the cinematography and visuals which were very unique and interesting. The way Anderson was able to use stop motion to his advantage and executing it perfectly to the smallest detail. This really caught my attention and was one of the main factors why I love this movie. The cinematography also made scenes more impactful especially those in which strong emotions like humor and anger are involved.
Another thing that I found very interesting in the movie was the way Japanese was used. With a Western and English-speaking audience, it would be assumed that Japanese be subtitled by Anderson in order for viewers to understand what these lines mean, but then, to my surprise, he didn't. There must be a reason behind this, and I believe that this measure was done in order to make the audience think. Viewers are used to having information served onto them on a silver platter but then having un-subtitled Japanese forced viewers, forced me to pay attention to every single minor detail in order to use them as context clues to decipher the hieroglyphics that is Japanese. This really helped me appreciate the stop motion animation and the movie as a whole.
