Review of Isle of Dogs (2018) by Jacob B — 17 Aug 2018
Beautifully animated with far less disturbing stop-motion character models than in Fantastic Mr. Fox whilst teaching a worthwhile message about the importance of treating animals well. Isle of Dogs has more of the trademark deadpan humour such as when the dogs take a vote whilst the film remains as aesthetically pleasing as ever.
When this movie was nearing release, it was then that I realized that Wes Anderson is a man who likes his frames to be symmetrical. I thought it was just a stylistic choice for Fantastic Mr. Fox due to the fewer limitations of animation, however tedious stop-motion may be.
Turns out I was wrong and it was present in his live-action films as well. Isle of Dogs shows that animated movies can have a rating stronger than PG without resorting to vulgar, South Park-style humour.
Isle of Dogs is a charming, detailed adventure. And hey, maybe we can all go learn Japanese lessons from watching this movie since the movie has no subtitles.
