Review of Island in the Sky (1938) by Steven H — 15 Nov 2007
This film has one of the best 'this aircraft is doomed' openings I've seen in a film. After that it just becomes very entertaining. Sure it has a few comedic gags that don't exactly translate to a 'sophisticated' modern audience, but at the time movies were built to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.
What amazes me is that the writers were able to take such a bare-bones novel (Plane goes down in Northern Canada and other pilots have to find it) and keep it fresh and honest without the slightest bit of sarcasm or cynicism.
