Review of Ishtar (1987) by Eric C — 17 Jul 2008
Now I know this consistently makes it on the list of the worst movies ever made. The only reason for that is that critics take themselves way too seriously. I mean obviously, a movie where two horrible musicians are pawns by the CIA to take out Middle Eastern terrorists is not a serious film.
I think they were so excited about the tandem of Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman that they assumed the movie would have more artistic merit. That being said, the movie is a classic and is a must-see.
You'll laugh your guts out both at the intentional and unintentional comedy. I haven't seen the movie in over a decade and as I write this, I can hear them singing "tellin the truth can be dangerous business" in my head.
"If you admit that you play the accordian, no one will hire you for their rock n roll band." That line in and of itself earns it at least 3 stars. And the fact that all the actors know its a gimmick gives it another one.
