Review of Irreversible (2002) by Matt F — 14 Aug 2010
To start with, I'm sure there's a perfectly pretentiously arty justification for the erratic, swirling, twirling camera movements but that's the first thing you'll notice that takes you out of this film.
That gripe aside everything else seems to fall into line. The story begins at the end and ends at the beginning. It's kind of laid out like one of those backwards spelled documents that are still laid out in chronological order so the human eye naturally translates them with little difficulty.
With it's brutality played out in shocking, unerring detail it blurs the line between arthouse and grindhouse. The problem is that with the backward-order you only start to actually become emotionally invested in the characters at the beginning (end) just before film ends (begins).
