Review of Irreversible (2002) by Princess S — 27 Dec 2010
Im naturally pre-disposed to like punk-rock cruelty, nastiness, and extremeness in movies. I love horror flicks, exploitation movies, and id put Irreversible in the same general category of extreme cinema.
I admire the fact that this is probably the most revolting movie ive ever seen (and the worst part is actually NOT the infamous rape scene). I admire the sound design, score (by one-half of daft punk) lighting, cinematography and loosy-goosy floating camera angles.
they create a mood of menace and despair and madness. in terms of the actual quality of the movie, I found its ending (SPOILER) about birth and the circular quality of life both inspiring and cheesy. the movie is undeniably homophobic in its depiction of the gay club, and the bellucci character is a passive cipher.
