Review of Irreversible (2002) by Benjamin C — 01 Aug 2011
Irréversible starts off fast, the cinematography in the opening scene (in some others too) is unsteady and hectical. The sequence takes place in a obscure gay club and ends with a murder. It's dirty and sick and overly brutal.
When you sustain this particular scene, however, Irrèversible turns into a pretty good movie reminiscent of one of my favourites, Memento, which has a similar, really amazing, non-linear narrative.
You have to give director Gaspar Noé some credit for his honesty and his guts showing such pervert sex games in the gay club (which's name is Rectum btw) and a 9-minute rape scene but also telling a compelling, although highly disturbing, story.
I love Memento and Cassel is one of my favourite actors so despite its weirdness it's a pretty awesome movie.
