Review of Irreversible (2002) by Mysterious G — 25 May 2009
Irreversible opens with stupefyingly repetitive scenes of bald French men up to what you would expect in an establishment that goes by the name 'Rectum', and after 90-minutes of vomit-inducing camera angles (other than the notorious rape scene), ends in a manner which will give half the audience epileptic fits and the rest migraines. The viewer gains a respite from the chaotic camerawork and dull, booming noises that comprise the soundtrack only during dialogue scenes of terminal dullness. To make matters worse, since the film is shown backwards - ooh, clever - you don't care about the characters anyway, since you already know what's going to happen. The actors perform competently, but the real problems are in the direction and cinematography.
A film that should have sunk without trace, well-known only for a rape scene. I had a headache by the time this finished.
