Review of Ironclad (2011) by Greg T — 04 Mar 2011
Bloody, brutish and bombastic, 'Ironclad' is such a perfect film for young boys who dig castles, broadswords & gory seiges. Set in the apparently forgotten period after the signing of the Magna Carta, the film follows Purefoy's haunted crusader and Cox's rebellious baron as they lead a motley crew in a defence of Rochester Castle from the seige of Giamatti's eye-rollingly evil King John.
The characters are paper-thin, their fates written from the start, though even with the frequent reminders of the battle for Helm's Deep this splattery movie still holds its own for pure entertainment value.
It's a shame that director Johnny English takes the epileptic Bourne Supremacy approach to editing his action, as the supremely gory FX are easily missed in the lightning quick cuts. Still, recommended for a clanking, clunky bit of populist history.
