Review of Ironclad (2011) by Tom B — 19 Jul 2011
Castles, gore and a mad Giametti = B movie tatt.
England 1215, and the villainous legend that was King John is the focus period for this poor B Movie. It is low budget, daft and from the dismiss-able mind of Jonathan English (Minotaur?!).
The film is macho, gorey, bloody, sometimes brutal and has castles in every backdrop.
The cast is painfully British C List (Crook, Dance, Purefoy and Flemyng) and for me was slow, it felt cheap, is woefully manly and bounded. The overplayed story treads along, building up to a battle scene and kill count exercise. There is plenty of sword play and deaths include a hanging, hand and feet being chopped off and then said body being catapulted against a wall - and this is the highlight of the film!
The American reviews have raved about this Brit B Movie cult cavort but I was left feeling like it was a disappointing Castle movie, obsessed with the gore side, and to be fair that is what I was expecting. Laughable and rigid, with rigid and inflexible actually being the meaning of ironclad!
