Review of Ironclad (2011) by Thomas D — 26 Jul 2011
Gritty, violent medieval thriller in which a Knights Templar (the grim-faced James Purefoy) leads a handful of mercenaries in holding a strategically important castle in order to prevent the evil King John (the always dependable Paul Giamatti) from marching across England with an army of Danish barbarians so he can nullify the Magna Carta.
A brutal and bloody siege follows. A good cast (including acting heavyweights Brian Cox and Derek Jacobi in supporting roles) help elevate the material, and the movie does at least pay lip service to the strategies employed by both sides, though director Jonathan English unfortunately chooses to go with confusing handheld shots in the thick of battle rather than letting the action speak for itself.
