Review of Iron Sky (2012) by Menno V — 11 Jun 2012
Saw it in Cinema in Groningen. While this film is by no means the height of political satire, it doesn't need to be. I went into this film expecting a hilariously absurd contrived plot permitting me to see Nazi saucers in combat with fighter jets but what I got was 93 minutes of black humor with lots of references to cult classics, including Dr. Strangelove, which I feel this film takes many cues from permitting me to see what I wanted, plus space combat with space zeppelins, and the meteorblitzkrieg.
The obvious jokes that were in there I could appreciate, and frankly the German had some jokes that may have got lost in translation, as there were no subtitles where I saw it for me to judge.
Overall this film is absolutely amazing. While the message may not be new - sort of - ('Modern nations need to reconsider their stance on natural resources and energy production, lest we all die in a nuclear holocaust over Helium-3 mined by Nazis'), or particularly well delivered, I got exactly what I was expecting and what I wanted this movie to be: Space Nazis played straight while the UN and Earth's representatives were generally not, and those two duking it out on earth and in space. 5/5.
