Review of Iron Sky (2012) by Elina J — 27 Jul 2012
I was very exited to see this film. Killing Nazis from the moon, what's not to like?
Twenty minutes in, and I feel like I am watching the premiere of "Game Over".
Every stereotype they could muster has appeared thus far. The African American Astronaut is ghetto and oblivious, the German scientist looks like Einstein, and the President of the US is a clone of Sarah Palin. When they duplicated the climactic scene from Downfall, it went from being mildly amusing to being painful.
I forged ahead, hoping for some respite from schlock.
Once I got past the horrible stereotypes, I began to find the homages to other films (Dr. Strangelove, for example) to be a little less than grating.
When the Nazi cheerleader gets to see the unedited version of The Great Dictator, it seems to be a small bright point in an otherwise dismal film. Alas, the wonderful possibilities of the Nazi turned humanist become buried under what becomes a weird mix of goofball comedy and sci-fi effects extravaganza.
Spaceballs, this is not. The humor is mostly mediocre. What Spaceballs had in comedy, this has in special effects. Unfortunately, special effects rarely carry a movie, and this is no exception.
In summation, the world still waits for a good Nazis from the Moon film. This is not it.
