Review of Iron Sky (2012) by Galen A — 09 Oct 2012
The biggest problem I have with this movie is that the initial, very short trailers I saw of it did not effectively convey what the movie is all about. The trailer talked of Nazis migrating to the far side of Moon and thriving, and I liked the idea. I thought it would be a Science Fiction movie, and it would be more about how they went there, how they adapted, etc.
Instead, it turned out to supposed to be a "Science Fiction Comedy", which the trailer absolutely showed no clue about. Being a "comedy" was supposed to allow it to have enormous, gaping holes in its plot, but in that regard it really didn't work very well. For one, it is not an all-out satirical comedy like "Airplane!!!", or "Top Secret", for example. It was admittedly funny in some spots, but not generally so. It was more of amusing overall, really.
The movie had great production values. The costumes were excellent, the sets tended to be small and limited most of the time, but these were stretched a bit by the special effects, which was pretty good, and another of the good things about the movie. In a way, the movie seemed mainly about showcasing the special effects of the Moon Base, Space Blimps, UFOs, etc., and just inserting a little bit of comedy in between.
The cast played with a lot of inspiration. Gotz Otto was particularly intimidating and effective in his role as a future Fuhrer, while Christopher Kirby was generally charismatic in his portrayal as an Astronaut. Peta Sergeant seemed to be enjoying her role a lot, and had some sexy, alluring scenes. But best of all was Julia Dietze, who was just oozing and dripping with sex appeal, and perhaps the highlight of the film.
A movie with such serious plot holes and identity problems would normally be outright sewage thrash, but the positive points do pull it out a bit from the muck. Despite that, though, it's a movie that I would not recommend to anybody else, unless you really are desperate to spend 1 1/2 hours of your life away in way, no matter how bad.
