Review of Iron Sky (2012) by Dave D — 16 Dec 2012
Nazis took refuge on the moon after WW2. Now they're back to finish the job in flying saucers and a huge battle cruiser.... powered by a mobile phone. Snigger. American astronauts revisit the moon.
... as a publicity stunt for a Sarah Palin-styled President. Titter. Like most films that deliberately set out to be a wacky, cult hit, spread by word of mouth over geekdom thanks to its high concept, trashy premise, it inevitably disappoints.
A bizarre German/Australian/Finnish co-production, for once it's not the production values that let it down, in fact the special effects are on a par with much of Hollywood and the actors do a decent enough job.
It's that perennial script and story fault - the Finnish writing and director team simply don't know what to do with their fanboy-friendly concept and fall back on lazy sci-fi and disaster movie cliches, punctuated by a few clumsy jokes to remind you zis ees a vacky movie, ja?!
