Review of Iron Man 3 (2013) by Edy M — 15 Feb 2016
Hands down the best Marvel CU film since the original "Iron Man" oddly enough. The credit rests in a lot of hands, but the first shout out goes to director Shane Black for taking risks within the relatively stringent guidelines that Marvel Studios places on its properties. The misdirection of Ben Kingsley's Mandarin is genius. The focus on Tony Stark's character in relation to and isolation from his suits is refreshing. And the violence has a grounded, real-world consequence that felt missing from all CU films to this point apart from Iron Man and the first Captain America.
It's not an unmitigated success though. Stark's PTSD is compelling at first considering the end of The Avengers, but spins into a hyperbolic mess by the conclusion. The filmmakers also had a chance to strike him with real, grave loss during the climax, but back out of it at the very end like most of these movies tend to do.
Overall though, this comes in at a close second to the original Iron Man as the best film in the Marvel CU (to this point). I have quite a few more to see though, so that may change. 7.6/10.
